Primary Function and Application

Its core function is to convert the weak millivolt (mV) signals generated by field thermocouple sensors into digital signals that the I/A Series control system can recognize and process.

• Signal Input: Receives temperature signals from up to 8 independent thermocouples.

• Signal Type: Supports multiple thermocouple types, such as J, K, T, E, R, S, B, N, C, etc.

• System Role: Acts as the “eyes” of the process control system, used to monitor critical temperature points in industrial settings (e.g., reactors, pipelines, furnaces).

5. Open Circuit Detection: Can detect if a thermocouple loop is broken (open) and report the fault to the control system, enhancing system reliability.

6. Field Power Isolation: Input channels are electrically isolated from the logic circuits and field power supply, effectively suppressing field noise and ensuring stable operation in harsh industrial environments.

7. Status Indicators: The module typically features LED indicators to display module status (e.g., OK, Fault), communication status, and individual channel activity.

8. Hot-Swappable Capability: In most I/A Series systems, FBM modules support hot-swapping, allowing for module replacement or maintenance without shutting down the system, significantly improving availability.

Physical Structure and Installation

• Form Factor: A standard FBM module, typically with a rugged metal housing.

• Installation: It must be plugged into a dedicated Field Bus Mounting Base, such as models FBM201, FBM202, etc. The base provides power and communication bus connection to the higher-level controller (e.g., FCP270).

• Wiring: Field thermocouple wires are connected to a Terminal Block Unit associated with the FBM231. This terminal unit then plugs into the front of the FBM module or connects to the base via a cable.
