The SMART Module is a mature, reliable, and easy-to-use communication gateway that solves the most common multi-protocol coexistence issues in industrial sites, providing engineers using Rockwell CompactLogix systems with a standardized, efficient, and cost-effective solution for interconnecting with a large number of Modbus TCP devices.

1. Protocol Conversion:

   • Host Side: Integrates with the CompactLogix L2/L3 CPU via the backplane, using the EtherNet/IP protocol for communication.

   • Client Side: Provides a dedicated 10/100 Mbps Ethernet port for connecting to a Modbus TCP network and can operate as either a Modbus TCP Client (Master) or Server (Slave).

2. Seamless Integration:

   • Hardware: The module plugs directly into the right-side slot of a CompactLogix L2/L3 controller, requiring no separate power supply or wiring.

   • Software: It is configured within Rockwell’s RSLogix 5000 / Studio 5000 programming software using a pre-defined Add-On Profile (AOP). This makes the configuration process intuitive, similar to setting up a standard Rockwell native module, with no need for complex communication instructions.

3. Data Mapping:

   • The module creates a tag structure within the RSLogix 5000 project. Users simply define the required Modbus register addresses (e.g., 40001, 30001) in the configuration interface and map them to corresponding PLC tags (e.g., INT[100]).

   • This mapping allows PLC programmers to access data from remote Modbus devices as if they were accessing ordinary array tags, greatly simplifying programming.

4. High Performance:

   • Supports simultaneous communication with multiple Modbus TCP Servers (Slaves) when acting as a Client.

   • Supports high-speed data exchange, meeting the requirements of most real-time control applications.
